OptiFuels New 30% SLV Nitro Tested!

Post by Alex Hasell on May 14th 2010 at http://innovation-rc.co.uk/blog/products/optifuels-new-30-slv-nitro-tested/#more-1112

We were recently sent some of Optifuels new Super SLV 30% mix to give it a good testing and see what the verdict was. First and foremost we would like to thank Andy from Optifuel for providing the fuel for the test and secondly Grant Cooper for testing it for us, cheers mate :)

SLV 30 Optifuel Compressed OPTI Shot

The testing was set to take place at the Park Hall Helicopter Club last weekend when they were holding their annual fun fly so at this point I'll hand over to Grant, this is what he thought about this new 'super fuel' ...........

I tried to gather as much information about this new 'super fuel' before I did any testing so I knew what I should expect. This new fuel contains newly developed oil's created by Klotz specifically for Optifuel. With a lower viscosit to allow smoother, faster delivery of fuel through the engine, this fuel should, in theory give increased throttle response throughout the entire rev range and higher power where it's needed!

I don't believe hype, so I've been pretty sceptical about this new fuel. I was told I should notice a major difference during 3D with absolutely no needle changes from standard Optifuel 30%, we shall see.

Testing - TT Redline 53 engine - T rex 600n

After flushing outall the remains of the previous fuel I started the engine and immediately noticed a slightly smoother idle without any major fluctuation in Idle speeds.

On spooling up, the change was even and smooth throughout the transitions. Normally with the Redline engine I get a little bit of spluttering during the transition from low to high speed so signs we looking good.

I run my t rex 600's head speed fairly high, around 2200rpm in idle up. In general sports flying and mild 3D it performed very similar to the standard optifuel 30%, producing good power throughout the range. Its not until you start really putting some load on the engine the differences become clear...

This is where the fuel really comes to life! I was trying to bog the engine as much as possible by repeated aileron tic-tocs. Normal fuels begin to bog down here, and when you keep on the power without giving the engine time to breath it just keeps on bogging down.

Optifuel SLV is a whole new beast here... When the engine begins to bog down it just stays on the power. You hear the RPM drop slightly, and it just refuses to budge. No amount of pitch would bog the engine speed to low. :-)

As soon as you let off the pitch, the engine revs recover incredibly quickly allowing pitch reversals almost instantly without worry.

The Verdict

Optifuel SLV is a big advancement forward for 3D pilots. Giving more power, and most importantly incredible performance under load due to it's greatly improved throttle response.

Is it worth the extra £4 per bottle? if you're a general sports pilot who doesn't try and tune your engine to the absolute max I would say no, stick with Optimix 30%/20%. If you're a 3D pilot looking for that extra power then this is definitely worth it!

Comments from the Smith Brothers who used SLV at the PitchBrothers Smackdown this weekend for the first time.

Hi Andy

We had the chance to try your new fuel (SLV) out over the weekend in Denmark and last night at our local field. We noticed a big improvement to throttle response and the engine is running a lot cooler and we are able to run the motor a bit richer than before developing more power. Using the current standard 30% for all of last year in our standard OS 50's we have not changed a rear bearing so the quality of the fuel must be outstanding. To be honest we were not expecting to notice a differet between the standard 30 and the new SLV and we have so it is a big credit to your team at the factory. Keep up the great work.

First comments from Jamie McKeen are on the web and he is stunned by the new SLV, here are his words, not mine!

Optifuel 30 Super SLV

First off, I know I'm sponsored by Optifuel, but let me be the first to say that I was super sceptical about this new 'super fuel'. Many times I heard that X fuel is the new daddy blah blah blah, and I said this to Andy (Mr Optifuel) at Charmouth, so I was eager to have a go with some!

Anyway, today I've finally been able to try this back to back with regular Opti 30, and the difference is like night and day. Opti 30 seems to be a very good all round 3D fuel, good power delivery, but this just takes it to a new level. It seems to make the whole machine smoother, both in the hover and when doing balls out of 3D. It has super smooth pickup, nice consistent smoke trail, and when pushed hard, it just doesn't load up. I tried to bog it hard during very fast aileron and elevator tic-tocs, and it just loads back a little and then the RPM just sits there, it's phenomenal. I read something on Opti's site, I think by Rob Turnball, saying it was like an electric machine, the power delivery really is relentless.

Anyway, I let Mike (Swashbuckler) have a few tanks to try it out, to get an unbiased opinion, but I had to leave the field before he ran it through his Shrimok, but have just spoken to him on MSN:

Quote:

Mike S says:

got the shrimok tuned properly after you left - f**k me ballistic or what'

If you aren't flying hard 3D, then it probably isn't worth the extra, but if you are practicing 3D, learning new moves where perhaps your collective management isn't what it should be yet, or you just want more power generally (and let's be honest, who doesn't!), then give a bottle a go, it's £4 per 5 litres more.

Jamie

OPTIFUELtm

THE CUTTING EDGE OF MODEL NITRO FUEL TECHNOLOGY

Guys you will have been aware that we have been working hard on a new SUPER fuel for people who really need extra power for 3D and Freestyle flying, both fixed wing and helicopter and we are getting close to releasing it. Our team pilots have been testing for the past month or so and we have been doing concentrated field trials since early January, this fuel is stunning!

Below are the exact comments from one of our fixed wing team Darren Dorgan who most fo the fixed wing fraternity will know as both he and his son Matt fly on the show circuit and for Al's Hobbies. Those who know Darren will understand he is not given to exaggeration! His words not mine remember!

Hi Andy,

At last we got out with the glow models yesterday - only a quick trip to the local strip in the afternoon but we did get to try the new OPTIMIX SUPER SLV.

In summary, WOW!

I tested it on my Inspire/Saito 100, which has been running on 20% MV.

To be honest, this engine has not been idling right for some time, and of late, although it has plenty of power in the large/smooth manoeuvres its performance out of the prop hang has been worrying at times. Matt's machine has been running well on the LV (OH2018), so I thought it would be good to test on mine.

Only managed to put 2 tanks through on SLV, but the difference in idling was apparent as soon as I'd started it, being much more consistent/reliable straight away (normally it would need to warm up a bit or be on a very high tick over from cold for this).

Throttle response on the ground was much crisper, and quicker. Power in the up-lines was marginally better, but where it really showed the gains was in the 3D. From the prop hang, it's punch out was like a different engine, as it was picking up much quicker, and the torque dragging the dead weight of the engine straight up was amazing.

This was with no change in needle settings and I think there's more to come from tuning, since I'd been chasing that around on the MV to get it right, but never getting there and the tappets are due to be reset. I now have one bottle of MV left, which I think will sit in the cupboard!

It will be interesting to try this on Matt's to see how much difference it makes against the LV, but we have 4 bottles of that left for now, so will burn that through first. I have 2 bottles of the SLV, so will keep that going on mine, and re-tune to see what I can get.

When will more SLV be available?

Cheers

Darren

Comments from Mike Williams, again one of the top fixed wing Freestyle and show pilots in the UK.

 Hi Andy,

Very good news from Darren, this mix is definitely a winner. I was using mine on my YS 160 this weekend with the same results, idling and throttle response is much more linear, I've now run out of SLV but if there's more in the pipeline I will definitely keep up the testing.

Regards

Mike

THE FASTEST GROWING FUEL BRAND IN THE WORLD POWERED BY KLOTZ® DRIVEN WITH PASSION!

DRIVING THE TECHNOLOGY

OK guys the SCUNK WORKS fuel was used in public for the first time at the invitation only 3D Heli flyin at STIANBURN on Sunday, in the words of Steven Gerrard 'when I changed to OPTIMIX-30 a couple of years ago it was like stepping up from a 50 sized to a 90 sized machine, fantastic, with the latest blend its just like that again, I would not have believed it possible, throttle response is like flying electric, it runs cool, idles better and is impossible to bog'. Rob Turnball was heard muttering 'awesome, fantastic can I have some more'. Watch the site for a release date and those who went electric might be coming back to Nitro!
